An alumni of California College of the Arts, graduated with a BFA. I aspire to work on animated television shows and really get into story telling for young adults. I am 25 years old and art has impacted my life greatly. When I am not working on animations, I enjoy reading and creating costumes and props.
Growing up I always watched my mother painting realistic landscape paintings in oil paint. I always knew I wanted to grow up to be an artist just like her, and her mother before her. Growing up in the 90’s introduced me however to the new age of technology. Along with it I was introduced to many traditionally animated Disney films and animated television shows like Scooby Doo and the Power Puff Girls on VHS and they fascinated and inspired me as I grew. I enjoyed creating fine art but I could see how technology was affecting the world of art. I wanted to take my skills and use them in something more relevant than painting. Remembering the animations that surrounded me as I grew I took an interest in animation.
I went to Diablo Valley Community College where I got an AA degree with a personal focus in Animation. CCA was the college my mother had attended and after touring it, it was the only college I wished to attend. My interest in animation grew. Not only did I find I had the patience for it, I found I could create a voice for myself using animation. Animation is a form of media, and media always contains messages that are given to the general public. These messages can help shape the upcoming generations, helping teach love and acceptance with changing times.
My ultimate goal for my animations is to help create a new genera for animated shows and movies. Currently animation is used for kids, or crude and violent adult media. I would like to help push for young adult animated media. Content that can hold heavier and important topics that are deemed too much for kid shows, yet not so inappropriate that they can only be shown late at night and cannot be seen by children at all. Young adult literature is a newer concept that was also doubted but later skyrocketed in success; I believe animations will be the same. There is clearly already a strong market for it; they simply need to be recognized. There is a want for deep complicated and meaningful plots and slow developments, with well rounded flawed characters that handle relevant and difficult topics like gender, sexuality, racism etc. By covering these issues we help validate viewers individual experiences and create more representation. Normalizing representation and showing viewers how to handle difficult circumstances will only help create more educated generations to come. I see this as a future we are already heading towards, I would simply like to work with television stations that have already started pushing boundaries with their current content to help give them the push in the right direction.
